My memories of Edward

(2001 NY B&B Convention)

I remember the first time I set eyes on Edward Albert. My mom and I were at the 1999 Beauty & the Beast Convention in Orlando, FL. When he walked onto the stage I burst into tears and could not believe my eyes. It really was a dream come true for me. I had fallen in love with Edward when I first saw him in The Yellow Rose (I even wrote NBC when it was cancelled to complain). I remember later when I was in the Q&A session I won the book raffle and again I burst into tears. Sweet Edward walked over to me, knelt down and gave me the warmest hug I have ever had. The funny thing is my friend Avril was sitting on my right and my mother was on the left. Well, they both aimed their cameras to take a picture of Edward hugging me and afterwards we learned that (and I can't remember who had what) Mom had no film in her camera and Avril had not taken off her camera lid. Another memory I have from that convention is when everyone was in the same room and Edward stood at the back, I could not keep from staring at him and poor Paulette (President of Edward's Fanclub), I certainly was a permanent extention to the table she had set up for Edward. I just stood there staring at his pictures in awe. I think my head was in the happy clouds the entire time. During the night of the banquet I was lucky enough to be able to present a gift to him, a Dolphin Music Box that I had bought. He was so thankful and just so generous in giving his time to speak to me.

Some years later after I had built a webpage dedicated to Edward I was pleasantly surprised to receive a few emails from him. He always addressed me as Angelita. I so wish I had kept those emails now.

The next time I met Edward was in New York at the 2001 Beauty & the Beast Convention. I was living in Dublin Ireland at the time. I remember sitting with him at the bar and buying him a drink. I remember how I laughed so hard at him, Jay and David when they were on stage. I"m embarrassed but when I was in line to get an autograph and Edward had finished signing my pictures, Ron Perlman asked me if I had anything for him. I blurted out "No, I'm all Edward!!!!!". I feel so foolish now and have long wanted to apologize to Ron. Even after I said I didn't have anything for him to sign I put a picture in front of him and asked him to sign it for my mother. Finally my favourite memory was at the auction. I won a bid on pictures of Edward or shall I say they let me win and Edward flew off the stage and gave me a beautiful kiss and hug. I have never felt more love or as beautiful since.

I feel guilty as I did not know Edward was sick or that he had died until October 12th of that year. I was in Salzburg, Austria on holiday when I sat down at the hostel computer and learned of his passing. I felt my whole body cry and I had this very sick feeling come over me but the tears seemed to allude me then. Even though I told my cousin who was with me at the time of my admiration for Edward I felt like she could never understand. It was some days later when I was back in Dublin and in my bed that I burst into tears and proclaimed "Why Edward?". My heart is forever scarred by his death. I will never pretend to understand why God took him so early. My dear friend Irene always says Edward is near and I would like to think so. Edward was the father I wish I had had and I will always be grateful to him for getting me through the darkest hours in my life, and though it crushes me still that he is gone, I will hold him in my heart always and look forward to the day I can see his smile again.

I have lit a candle in memory of Edward. If you would like to add comments to mine please click on the link below (once there, put EA for candle initials & BB for group initials)

Memories of Edward by Dvora Mayer

(I graciously thank Dvora Mayer for her contribution)

I have the most fond memories of Edward. I ran the 1995 B&B Convention in Los Angeles . It was an enormous undertaking, we were far-reaching in the events we jam-packed into a 4-day weekend. I was first impressed with Edward when he most willingly and enthusiastically jumped into a star-studded original musical my friend Erick Jonasson had written for the convention. Edward did this wonderful “Elvis-type” song, and it was a show-stopper. For those of you who might have grown up and lived in the Hollywood area, this city is reknown for “celeb attitude” which is an inflated feeling of self (and we did get some of that from the over 25 celebs that came to our convention). But Edward was selfless. His heart was as big as all outdoors. When he jumped whole-heartedly into the musical, my esteem of the man jumped and made my heart smile. I was working so hard and to see a man give so much of himself for the fans of Beauty & the Beast took all the focus off the stress of running a convention and showed what a wonderful man he was.

It got even better. During the Celebrity Auction, the proceeds which were going to Laguna Shanti an AIDS organization, Edward was on stage hawking the wares, making everyone laugh and smile, jumping around stage. I had learned between the time of the musical and the auction, that the man was in real pain with a very bad back. The audience would never have known the way he threw himself into this with a flexibility that would make Barishnokov blush. I was on the sidelines the entire time. I could see the sheen of sweat on his brow and the occasional grimace that I knew the pain was causing. At one point, I handed him a drink and whispered in his ear, “Edward, if you want to take a break please just let me know.” He looked me straight in the eye, folded my hand in his two, and said, “I am here for a cause. I need to raise as much for this cause as possible.” The charisma of the man was incredible. I said, “is there anything then I can get for you?” He smiled and said, “a Tylenol?” I ran like the dickens to get him what I could, lol.

After that, Edward had a fan for life in me. Not because of his portrayal of a television character, but because of his tenure as an extraordinary human being. Since I also work in many charity organizations, I volunteered some times for his cause, which was to raise funds for the “Plaza De La Raza” in old Los Angeles . He worked as tirelessly for those causes as I witnessed at the Beauty & The Beast convention in 1995. The world is colder without him.

I have added 2 pictures from that time (I’m in the copper ballgown). The first one is me & Edward clowning around while Ron Perlman is in a conversation with the President of Republic Pictures; we were backstage in the kitchen, waiting to make a surprise appearance on stage for the convention. The second is a group photo (taken by none other than Jamie “Myhr” Murray ) and shows David Schwartz, Edward Albert, Ron Perlman, me (Dvora Mayer), Caitlyn O’Heaney, David Greenlee, and Roy Dotrice.

Ahh, the memories. Thanks for listening!

Some uncomfortable moments arise when Hawn's boyfriend Paul Michael Glaser enters the scene. A happy ending ensues when Albert comes to realize that it was his mother's famous "Donnie Dark" stories, a series of kiddie books about a blind child, which gave him the strength of will that he possesses as an adult. Midway (06/18/76) aka Battle of Midway (Philippines: English title) (UK) aka The Battle of Midway (USA: video title)

Character: Ensign Thomas Garth

This was the second film to be presented in "Sensurround",a special low-frequency bass speaker setup consisting of four huge speakers loaned by distributors to select theatres showing the film. This system was employed only during certain sequences of the film, and was so powerful that it actually cracked plaster at some movie theaters. "Sensurround" was employed in only three other films released by universal Earthquake (1974), Rollercoaster (1977), and the theatrical release of Battlestar Galactica (1978)(TV). Most dogfight sequences come from 1942 newsreels, with considerable cropping due to the need to adapt the image to the Panavision framing.

Most sequences of the Japanese air raids on Midway are stock shots from 20th Century Fox's Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970)(for instance, the jeep thrown into a wall by a bomb blast). Several action scenes, including the one were a Zero slams into the Yorktown's bridge, were taken from Away All Boats (1956). Scenes of Dolittle's Tokyo raid at the beginning of the movie are from Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944).

ToshirĂ´ Mifune's voice is dubbed by American actor Paul Frees. Jack Smight replaced John Guillermin as director. Almost all the on-board scenes were filmed on the USS Lexington. Lexington was an Essex-class "fast carrier" commissioned in February, 1943. Even some of the "Japanese carriers" shown in birds-eye views were actually Lexington (with the film reversed to put the island superstructure on the port side whereas all US carriers had them on the starboard side) Lexington, decommissioned in 1991, was the longest serving carrier in history. Lexington is now a museum ship at Corpus Christi, Texas. The credits at the end of the movie play over a loop of film. The sailor on the flight deck railing repeats the same movements several times over. The clip showing "Tom Garth's" plane crashing and breaking in two is one of the most used crash sequences from WWII. In the actual crash, the pilot was hardly even shaken up and immediately climbed out on his own. When Matt Garth was making his landing approach after the battle, the number 34 can be clearly seen on the carrier stern.

This is the U.S.S. Oriskany (Big O). The Oriskany was sunk off Pensacola, FL in May, 2006 to become an artificial reef and dive site. The cost was $20,000,000 and is expected to generate revenues, as a tourist/dive site, of over $9,000,000 per year. Robert Mitchum filmed his cameo in a day. Henry Fonda played Admiral Chester Nimitz twice, in this film and in In Harm's Way (1965). In the earlier film, Fonda's character is never referenced by name, only as "CINCPAC", the acronym for his post--Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet. It is an old Naval tradition that a captain, and by extension any commanding officer, is not just himself, he is his command and, on certain occasions, such as when arriving or departing a naval warship, is always identified as the command, never by name. According to "The Big E: The Story of the USS Enterprise," by Edward P. Stafford, the real cause of the loss of almost all of the torpedo planes was caused by problems with radio frequencies. The torpedo planes lost contact with the fighters and dive bombers. As they attacked the Japanese carriers first, the Zeros came down to attack them. All attention was focused on the torpedo bombers. When the U.S. dive bombers arrived over the carriers, there was no air cover. Had the attack been synchronized, as planned, it is possible that the end results would have been quite different.

Plot: An expensive war epic, Midway emulates The Longest Day and Tora! Tora! Tora!in attempting to recreate a famous World War II battle from both American and Japanese viewpoints. The 1942 battle of Midway was the turning point of the War in the Pacific; the Japanese invasion fleet was destroyed, and America's string of humiliating defeats was finally broken. Though the battle itself was sufficiently dramatic to fill two films, Midway also has plotline involving the mixed-race marriage between Ensign Garth(Edward Albert), son of Navy Captain Matt Garth(Charlton Heston), and Haruko Sakura(Christina Kokubo), a Hawaiian girl of Japanese descent. The real-life personages depicted herein include American Admirals Nimitz(Henry Fonda), Halsey(Robert Mitchum)and Spruance(Glenn Ford), and Japanese Admiral Yamamoto(Toshiro Mifune, his voice once again dubbed by Paul Frees, whom Mifune personally selected for the job). For its original road show release, Midway was offered in the "Sensurround" process, which electronically shook and vibrated the audience's chairs during the battle sequences.
